The Annual, challenge cup game between the Ashford Antiques (AA’s) v Sunbury Stars of the Past (SSOP) at Short Lane. We had a big turn out of players (see photos below), and supporters and it was a memorial match for Sunbury Star of the Past (SSOP) Ange Petch who died from cancer earlier this year at the age of 47, and several of her family were present. It turned out to be a ding dong of a game with Sunbury scoring first and then going 2 – 0 up, despite some good saves from Jo Lawton in the AAs goal. We managed to pull one back when Sue Westlake converted a hard cross from the right before half time. Despite early pressure from the AAs, the SSOP’s went further ahead following a defensive lapse to make the score 3-1. We rallied though and with a lot of determination being shown up front, especially by Gillian Clegg, we scored a second when Gillian cleverly deflected in a hard cross. As the game wore on, chances were created at either end and the SSOP hit the post, but we then got the equaliser when a hard strike from a corner was helped on its way by Lynne Morgan from close in to make the scores even. Santa came to see us after and the Ange Petch memorial shield was awarded to Betty from SSOP who was coached by Ange in her later days. Sarah Taylor and Ali Summerfield made their debuts for the AAs.
