Ashford 3s vs Berrylands

30/09/2023
Ashford 3s vs Berrylands. 0-5 LOSS
A lovely sunny day greeted our first home league game of the season. It was great to welcome back Luvvy after a long injury and also Jacqui Bashford for her first 3s league game. Fantastic also to welcome Lucy Scott as she eases back into playing following injury. With the new faces and the established team mates we set out with a will to win and a positive attitude. The opposition were young, skillful and determined, and peppered our defence with multiple attacks. The team, learning to play with each other, struggled to repel them in the first half. The strong defenders distributed well from the back but there was a high turnover in midfield resulting in further attacks on our goal. Luvvy marked her return by scoring a spectacular deflected goal right into the top net. Oops, wrong end! LOL. With another accidental deflection into goal passing hard working Rachael, we were left an unfortunate 0-2 down at the break.
Solid and calm guidance from Matty saw an improved performance in the second half. Improvement was instant and obvious. Letting the ball do the work we began to use our width. With Matty shouting “patience” from the side, we calmed down on the ball and started to string passes together going red to red. With greater controlled possession we were able to develop a number of attacking moves and were able to venture into the opposition D. There were good passages of play down the right and Daya again deservedly won Player of the Match. Lily G worked hard throughout and towards the end had a go in midfield to good effect. At times, there was also some positive and effective calling in the match to support other players. Right at the end our hard work won a short corner. With a firm injection from Lucy and a strong strike by Gill we were sadly denied a goal by a solid save from Berrylands Goalie.
So overall, a team in development. Progression was clear and we are learning to play together with positive impact. I feel we will go from strength to strength with continued guidance from Matty and good attendance at training.
Meanwhile Sherpa and Talia did a fine job of umpiring. So much so that Talia was judged to have passed her umpiring assessment. Well deserved!
Team: Rachael, Luvvy, Lucie, Chris, Jacqui, Daya, Celia, Caitlin, Alice, Lucy, Lily G, Gill. Well done one and all!
