Going into the game with high hopes for the season ahead, though without our keeper captain, the 2s were quickly put in their place by a newly-promoted, skilful Ramgarhia side. In truth, we started badly and got worse as the opposition ran riot for the opening 25 minutes. Before we had a chance to blink, we found ourselves 6-0 down through a combination of poor marking, teething problems adapting to a new style of play and individual errors, as we were carved open time and again – the opposition thinking Christmas had come early.
A half time team talk ringing in our ears, the 2s came out fighting and quickly pulled a consolation goal back through Matt Emmerton as he latched onto a deflected through ball to round the keeper and slot home into an empty net. Whilst the second half was a lot more even than the first, Ramgarhia stepped on the gas towards the end to net a 7th and, in truth, could have had a couple more before the final whistle.
An opening 7-1 loss and a game to forget. Especially for Matt Sutch, who made a striker nearing retirement look like Usain Bolt on the pitch and managed to make George Best look tee-total off it.
Now we look ahead to the next game against a youthful Wycombe 2s side, where we have a fairly dismal recent record, hoping time on the training ground can help bed in the new system.
