Ashford (Middlesex) Hockey Club has been part of this community for decades. Generations of players have trained under the floodlights at Short Lane, Stanwell — juniors finding their feet, seniors competing at league level, friends made for life on and off the pitch. Those lights have been on through every winter evening, every early morning session, every match that couldn't wait for daylight.
But those lights are now 27 years old — and they're failing.
Our current metal halide floodlights are first-generation technology. Parts are no longer available. Repairs are becoming impossible. The system that has lit up thousands of hours of hockey is reaching the end of its life, and without action, evening play at Ashford (Middlesex) Hockey Club is at risk.
We have a plan — and we need your help to complete it.
We're upgrading all 24 light clusters across our 8 floodlight columns to modern LED technology. The new lights will deliver 500 lux — the standard for national league hockey — giving our players the best possible playing conditions for training and matches alike. The system includes smart controls, allowing us to dim to training levels, operate half the pitch, and manage energy use at the touch of a button. The project has full planning clearance from Spelthorne Borough Council.
We've already made great progress. We are delighted to have been awarded a grant from Surrey County Council, and Ashford (Short Lane) Sports — who manage and operate our site — have committed a contribution of their own. Their support is a real vote of confidence in this project and in the future of hockey at Short Lane.
But we're not there yet — and that's where you come in.
